ORGANOSILANE APPLICATIONS IN DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES

Industry Product Selection Guide

Adhesives & Sealants

SiSiB® silane adhesion promoters are bifunctional organosilicone compounds which act as molecular bridges between the polymer matrix of an adhesive or sealant and the substrate, either inorganic or organic. SiSiB® SILANES can improve adhesive or sealant adhesion significantly. SiSiB® SILANES react chemically and promote adhesion: (1) between the base polymer in a sealant and the inorganic fillers in the formulation and / or (2) between the base polymer and the substrate.

SiSiB® silane coupling agents
are used to bind the organic polymers to a mineral or siliceous filler, increase adhesion between fillers and polymers in adhesives and sealant.

SiSiB® Silane Water Scavengers / Drying Agents.
Alkoxysilanes react very rapidly with water; they are usually used to capture excess moisture in sealants and adhesives. SiSiB® PC6110, Vinyltrimethoxysilane is the most common moisture scavenger, due to the electron interactions of the vinyl group it reacts with moisture faster than other alkoxy silanes, enabling it to function as a moisture scavenger in the presence of other silanes incorporated as adhesion promoters, crosslinkers or coupling agents. The amount of silane added will depend on the water content of the formulation constituents.

SiSiB® Silane Crosslinkers (Crosslinking Agents).
SiSiB® silanes can be used to crosslink polymers such as acrylates, polyethers, polyurethanes, and polyesters.

SiSiB® Silanol Terminated Silicone Polymer for RTV.
The silanol (-OH) terminated silicone polymer is the basis for the formulation of one-component, moisture curing RTV silicones and two-component, condensation curing RTV silicone compounds. The synthesis of silicone polymer is a multistep process beginning with elemental silicon.

SiSiB® Silane Endcappers.
In recent years, silane-terminated polyurethanes (STPs) have become increasingly attractive to manufacturers of sealants and adhesives thanks to a unique combination of excellent cohesive strength and good adhesive properties. STPs can be prepared by reacting traditional NCO-terminated polyurethane prepolymers with secondary aminosilanes. Those aminosilanes react very fast with free isocyanate groups and lead to a high converted silane-endcapped product. Side reactions can be significantly reduced.

Cosmetics

Silane treatment is a shear-resistant coating that imparts a regular, highly hydrophobic surface to cosmetic pigments and powders. The chemically bound coating ties up reactive sites on pigment particle surfaces eliminating the potential for chemical reactivity with other components of a system.

Glass Fiber and Fabrics

Silane coupling agents are an important component of glass-reinforced polymers. The glass is very hydrophilic and attracts water to the interface. Without silane treatment on the glass surface, the bond between the glass fiber and the resin would weaken and eventually fail, making a composite essentially useless.

Benefits imparted to glass-reinforced polymers:
Increased mechanical strength of the composites
Improved electrical properties
Improved resistance to moisture attack at the interface
Improved wet-out of the glass fiber
Improved fiber strand integrity, protection and handling
Improved resistance to hot solder during fabrication
Improved performance in cycling tests from hot to cold extremes

Olefin Polymerisation

Selected silanes, known as external donors or electron donors, are used in conjunction with Ziegler-Natta catalysts in the manufacture of ethylene and polypropylene.
Ziegler-Natta catalysts are organometallic compounds; organoalkoxysilanes can chemically coordinate with the organometallic catalyst to modify the course of the polymerization. Different silane donors with differing organoalkoxy structures are used depending on the exact nature of the catalyst and the type of polypropylene being manufactured.

Vinyl silanes have been used commercially since the 1970s to crosslink polyethylene homopolymer and its copolymers. Vinyltrimethoxysilane and vinyltriethoxysilane are the most common silanes used in the process. In an extruder in the presence of peroxide and heat, the vinyl group will graft to the polyethylene backbone, yielding a silane-modified polyethylene that contains pendant trialkoxysilyl functionality. The grafted polyethylene can then be immediately crosslinked in the presence of a tin catalyst, moisture and heat to create a silane-crosslinked product.
